We are adding an additional GC-MS (Gas Chromatography–Mass Spectrometer) to our environmental laboratory. Analyses using GC-MS (gas chromatography–mass spectrometry)
are a powerful technique that separates, identifies, and quantifies volatile and semi-volatile organic compounds in complex mixtures.
The method is used to detect potential contaminants in excavated materials, soil, and land. The hazardous substances primarily investigated include the presence of PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons), BTEX, aliphatics, and aromatics.
Together with metal (“heavy metal”) analyses performed using our ICP-MS, this provides a comprehensive picture of how the material can be classified as contaminated soil.
The analytical results can be used as a basis for the handling and sorting of excavated materials in accordance with the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency’s guideline values for contaminated land.
