Due to new EU regulations, the Swedish Work Environment Authority is tightening the rules on asbestos in the air. The rules are primarily aimed at those working in the construction industry who risk exposure to asbestos dust.

The new rules include several important changes:

✅ Lower limit value for asbestos in air

The occupational exposure limit is lowered from 0.1 fibers/cm³ to 0.01 fibers/cm³, a tenfold tightening. This applies to airborne asbestos at workplaces, not asbestos in solid materials.
Employers must implement more effective protective measures and conduct more thorough risk assessments to avoid exceeding the limit value.

✅ More people must be trained – including those at risk of indirect exposure

People who do not handle asbestos directly but may be exposed (e.g., painters, electricians, HVAC installers, property managers, waste personnel) must now undergo tailored training, including theory, practical exercises, and a knowledge test.
Training certificates must now include more information than before.

✅ Medical examinations for more workers

The exemption for medical examinations for exposure under 50 hours per year is removed.

Everyone covered by a permit or at risk of exposure (e.g., landfill staff, recycling centers) must undergo regular health checks.

✅ What does this mean for employers?

Review risk assessments, protective equipment, training efforts, and medical examinations.

No new permits are required, and previous training is valid if it meets the new requirements.
